Who writes the guides

Meet our editors

Three people write and edit everything on Basement Dehumidifiers. We don't have the units sitting in front of us, and we don't pretend to. The work is reading spec sheets, manuals, warranty terms and owner reviews, lining models up side by side, and updating the rankings when prices or models change. Every guide names the person who wrote it and the person who edited it.

Megan Sorensen

Senior editor

Megan is the senior editor of Basement Dehumidifiers. She decides what goes into each ranking, checks every capacity claim against the spec sheet and the manual, and reads owner reviews looking for the complaints that keep coming back. Sizing is her hobbyhorse: she would rather you buy a unit that fits the room than the biggest one on the shelf.

  • Humidity targets and hygrometer readings
  • Sizing: pints per day vs square feet
  • Musty-basement troubleshooting
  • Keeping the rankings current

Curtis Delaney

Buying-guide writer

Curtis writes our guides on drainage, hoses and placement. He reads parts diagrams and installation pages so you don't have to, compares port sizes and pump lift heights across models, and goes through owner reviews for the leaks and stalled pumps that show up months later. If the water has to go uphill, he wants you to know before you order.

  • Gravity drains and condensate pumps
  • Drain hoses, ports and fittings
  • Placement and clearances
  • Water routes to sinks, sump pits and floor drains

Nadia Ellison

Specs & warranty editor

Nadia is our specs and warranty editor. She looks up exact model numbers in the ENERGY STAR product finder, reads warranty terms down to the exclusions, and compares what manuals say about cold basements and defrost. She also keeps the cleaning guide in line with what manufacturers ask for. If a number is missing from the paperwork, she says so on the page.

  • ENERGY STAR data and Integrated Energy Factor
  • Warranty terms and exclusions
  • Cold basements, low-temperature limits and defrost
  • Filters, buckets and maintenance schedules
