Best Whole House Dehumidifiers in 2026

Five dehumidifiers whose own listings claim the whole house, not just the damp corner. A few are ducted units meant to hang off your HVAC; most are big portables that sit in the basement and work on the air from the floors above. Ranked on buyer ratings, review volume and what each listing states.

In short

One machine for the whole place? We'd start with the Waykar 120-Pint, Auto Swing. The other four differ on size, drain route and whether they can be ducted at all. One slot per listing family, so these are five separate machines rather than one model in five colours.

How to choose

What "whole house" means on a listing

Two very different machines get sold as whole-house dehumidifiers. The first kind is ducted: it sits near the air handler or in the crawl space and moves air through the ductwork, so every room gets dry air. The second kind is a large portable you park in the basement, whose listing claims enough coverage for the whole home. Of the 19 eligible listings, four mention ducting; the rest are portables.

Honestly, the catch is airflow. A portable on the basement floor dries the basement first, and the upstairs only as far as the air actually travels (open stairwell, return vents, a door left open). If the bedrooms feel clammy and the basement is fine, you're probably shopping for a ducted unit and an HVAC contractor. If the basement is where the damp starts, a big portable with a hose to the floor drain is the cheaper fix. The heaviest units are in our commercial dehumidifier ranking, and the sizing guide explains why a square-footage claim is a best case.

How we rank

Every model gets a rating out of 10 from its exact listing: what buyers give it, how many of them there are, and how completely the seller documents the specs. The highest unrounded result wins; on an exact tie, the listing identifier decides.

When a #1 pick carries a rating we set ourselves, its formula result always sits right next to it. We haven't run these units in a basement of our own, and a commission never moves a rating or a rank.

  • 45 % buyer rating, damped when a listing has fewer than 50 reviews.
  • 35 % review volume, on a logarithmic scale up to 5,000 reviews.
  • 20 % documentation: feature bullets, images and stated brand of the listing.
  • Pints per day, coverage and drainage are shown only when the exact listing states them; seller test conditions vary, and we measure nothing ourselves.
  • One slot per listing family: variants of one parent listing, which usually share one review pool, count once and are listed under the best-rated variant.
  • Prices carry the date we recorded them. They may have changed since; the button shows today's offer.

Frequently asked questions

Which is the best whole house dehumidifier in 2026?

Our pick is the Waykar 120-Pint, Auto Swing, at 9.4/10 (excellent), straight from the formula. It has 22,513 buyer reviews averaging 4.3/5, a review pool shared by the Waykar listing family (2 variants); its listing states 120 pints/day and up to 6,000 sq ft. Close behind: the Vellgoo 6,000 sq ft with Pump at 8.7/10.

How is this ranking built?

We start from 19 dehumidifiers whose own listing names whole-house or whole-home use, or ducting to the HVAC, each with a buyer review record. Each one gets a rating out of 10: 45 % buyer rating, 35 % review volume and 20 % how completely the listing documents its specs. Variants of one listing family (same parent listing or the same shared review pool) share a single slot: the best-rated variant represents the family, and the others are listed under it.

Is a whole house dehumidifier better than a portable one?

Not automatically. A ducted unit treats air from every room through the HVAC ductwork, but it costs more and usually needs an installer. A large portable in the basement is cheaper and you can set it up yourself, yet it only dries the air that reaches it. Four of the 19 eligible listings here mention ducting.

How much does a whole house dehumidifier cost?

Among the 16 eligible listings with a recorded price, the range ran from $190 (DGVAM 4,500 sq ft with Drain Hose) to $2,368 (Santa Fe Oasis105), with a median of $914, on Sep 30, 2026. Prices change, and a ducted install adds the installer's bill on top.

What size whole house dehumidifier do I need?

Start from the floor area that shares air and how damp it is, then use the ENERGY STAR chart in our selection tool. The listings here claim 2,200 to 7,500 sq ft of coverage; read those as seller best cases.

Can a whole house dehumidifier connect to my HVAC?

Only the ones designed for it. Look for duct connections and an installation section that covers the air handler in the manual. A portable whose listing says "whole home" is not ducted just because of the wording.

Are the prices up to date?

Each price is the one we recorded on Sep 30, 2026, and it may have changed since. The button always opens the exact listing with today's price and seller.

Have you used these dehumidifiers yourselves?

No, we haven't run these units in a basement of our own. The ratings come from what buyers say and from the specs stated in each exact listing, weighed with a formula we publish.
